What’s Next for the Winner of Jose Aldo vs Rob Font

UFC action returns as Jose Aldo and Rob Font main event a stacked Fight Night card this weekend. This will be a fun main event with two of the best strikers in the bantamweight division going head to head. However, with the division being in disarray, with Aljamain Sterling not being able to defend his title at UFC 267, it leaves these two in a difficult spot no matter the result.

Next year, we’re bound to get the rematch between Sterling and interim champion Petr Yan to crown an undisputed champion. Hopefully, there’ll be a definitive winner in that fight and I don’t expect the UFC to pull a trilogy trigger with those two straight off the bat.

More likely than not, this leaves TJ Dillashaw waiting in the wings for a chance to reclaim his title after his win against Cory Sandhagen in July. Dana White himself said, “You do the Sterling fight, you get that over with and then whoever wins would fight Dillashaw.”

This would be a tough break for Rob Font, who could put up a valid argument for being next in line for a championship opportunity if he beats Aldo on Saturday as he would’ve won 5 fights in a row in comparison to Dillashaw having one win since his return from suspension. Nevertheless, it’s highly likely that Font would have to fight the loser of Sterling vs Yan or Cory Sandhagen if he wants a title shot in the next couple of years.

If Aldo was to win this weekend, I don’t think it would put him back in the title picture just yet, I believe he’d be an afterthought behind the likes of Dillashaw and Sandhagen, I wouldn’t even be surprised if he had to fight down the rankings and fight someone such as Merab Dvalishvili, who has looked unstoppable since his loss to Ricky Simon in 2018. If Aldo was to beat someone such as Merab, I believe they’d consider pushing the legend back up to the top of the division to fight the top 1-3 ranked fighters.

The UFC bantamweight division is stacked and I’m excited to see what occurs next, I think Font could put himself in the title picture with a win but there are a few guys ahead of him that seem to be dictating the spots around the title. Nevertheless it’ll be a fun fight on Saturday which will display some excellent kickboxing and we’ll see what happens from there.
