Rambling About: UFC 265

UFC 265 is less than a week away and it’s the least anticipated PPV of the year so far. For the casual fan, there isn’t much to entice them. They might know Derrick Lewis and Jose Aldo, but even those two aren’t huge names like we’ve seen main event card throughout 2021.

For the die hard fans, this card is pretty decent. It’s not a PPV level card but there will definitely be some interesting fights. Song Yadong vs Casey Kenney to start the night could produce fireworks. Chiesa and Luque will be an interesting battle especially with both men having high level jiu-jitsu and Luque being good on the feet. Finally, the main event will be a great battle of skill vs power.

The main event being for the interim title has to be a selling point for the PPV. Although Francis Ngannou is currently injured and waiting to fight Jon Jones, he won the title in March at UFC 260 and I don’t think it’s fair on him to give a new ‘champ’ while he’s only been the king of the 265lbs for less than 5 months. Volkanovski, who fights at UFC 266, hasn’t fought since July of last year and there was no interim bout for his title. Zhang Weilei didn’t defend her title for over a year and there was no interim champion crowned, while she was gone. Like the champion, I find it disrespectful because there’s no reason for Gane and Lewis to gain an interim title shot.

I’ll breakdown the fight more in my predictions but I feel the way Dana White and the UFC have gone about this is wrong.

With Nunes vs Pena being cancelled, it got me wondering how many fights she has left before she calls it quits. She’s a two division champion, has beaten every credible challenge that comes her way and she’s the undisputed GOAT of women’s MMA. I don’t think there’s anyone near her level in the Bantamweight or Featherweight division. At the moment, the only person who’s on her level is Valentina Shevchenko, who’s she’s beaten twice, controversial or not. Apparently, there will be a 3rd fight between the two greatest female fighters of all time so my guess is that Nunes will call it quits after that. I hope they fight soon because both of them need someone to push them to their limit, as they’ve ran through three divisions between the two of them.
