Wow! That’s the best way to make your debut in the UFC. Former 2x Bellator Lightweight Champion, Michael Chandler knocked out #6 ranked Dan Hooker in 2:30 seconds in round one.
With a knockout like that against a competitor like Hooker, he’s got to be put in the hunt for the belt now. I predicted a Chandler win but I never expected a KO. As we know, Hooker has been in some wars in his career, especially his last two fights against Poirier and Felder and in both those fights it seemed as if he had an unbreakable chin but Chandler proved that wrong tonight.
Now onto the main event, where Dustin Poirier shocked the world by defeating Conor McGregor by KO in round two. I predicted Poirier would use the leg kicks to slow the Irishman down and I expected him to wrestle in the first round to wear the former double champ down. However, I never expected him to finish McGregor in less than three rounds.
So now what for the title.? If Khabib doesn’t come back, I think we have to see either Chandler vs Poirier or Oliveira vs Poirier this year. Both Chandler and Oliveira deserve the shot for the title after their performances against Hooker and Ferguson. If Khabib does come back, does Dustin get a chance before Charles? Dana White has a lot of decisions to make going into this year with this stacked lightweight division.
All in all the prelims were pretty poor yet the main card was incredible and this show has started the UFC’s 2021 with a bang.
