It Wasn’t the Greatest But It Was Really Good

I had low expectations for Edge vs Orton and to be honest, I don’t know why. These two are icons of the pro wrestling that have proven themselves to have great chemistry in the ring over the last two decades but maybe because of their old age, I thought it wouldn’t be as good as hyped.

The whole point of this match was to get people talking and that’s exactly what it did.  Tagging a match as the greatest wrestling match ever before it has even happened will pull attention from everywhere and WWE were very smart on that point as I’m sure this would draw fans of rival companies to watch if it would live up to the potential.

Also, now if you are to search ‘greatest wrestling match ever’ this match will come up rather than matches such as Okada vs Omega, Okada vs Tanahashi or even some NXT matches such as Cole vs Gargano. This could possibly draw in new fans of wrestling to the WWE rather than leading them elsewhere. Genius!

I won’t go into much detail on the match, I think it’s better if you watch it yourself. However, what I will say is that the storytelling is brilliant and the callback to attitude era and ruthless aggression era with Pedigrees and Rock Bottoms were highlights of this match.  Also and most importantly, ORTON BROUGHT BACK THE PUNT KICK!

But was it the greatest wrestling match of all time? No. I can name 10 matches that are better off the top of my head (IMO).

  1. Okada vs Omega (all of them but I’ll only count one)
  2. Okada vs Ospreay – 2019 G1 Climax Day 7
  3. Ibushi vs White – 2019 G1 Climax Day 19
  4. WALTER vs Bate – NXT UK Takeover Cardiff
  5. Gargano vs Cole – NXT Takeover XXV
  6. Cody vs Dustin – AEW Double or Nothing
  7. Punk vs Cena – MITB 2011
  8. Hart vs Austin – Wrestlemania 13
  9. Gargano vs Ciampa – NXT Takeover New Orleans
  10. Ospreay vs Takagi – Best of the Super Juniors 2019

Within those matches, there’s a lot of variety in styles and eras of wrestling as well I’m looking very deep into this but it’s all fun. I’d rate the match 5/5 definitely an iconic match which capped off a pretty good Backlash PPV.

Hope you enjoyed and have a great day!
