First of all, UFC 249 was a great event we had some incredible fights, especially, the main event, where we saw Justin Gaethje shock the world with his impeccable performance against Tony Ferguson, winning via TKO in the 5th round. We also had Francis Ngannou destroy ‘Bigi Boy’ Rozenstruik in 20 seconds staking his claim for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Even the prelims had a great fight between Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerone. However, arguably the biggest news of the night came from the retirement of Henry Cejudo.
Cejudo only being 33 and technically a two-division champion was at the top of his game, especially beating a returning Dominic Cruz in two rounds, albeit after questionable officiating. Cejudo said he has a family now he wants to focus on, however could this be him laying his cards on the table for Dana White to give him that long-awaited pay rise he’s been searching for?
Cejudo clearly believes he’s a big draw for fans and money for the company. To us fans, he is, yet to casual fans, he’s doesn’t have that same pull as a Connor Mcgregor or Jon Jones brings.
However, this could be Cejudo genuinely retiring after a great career in MMA and a terrific Olympic Gold medal in wrestling in 2008. If this is the case, which it probably is I’m poking fun for clicks, I want to congratulate Henry Cejudo on an incredible career. Definitely one of the best fighters of all time and I wish him well in his future endeavours.
