Jon “Bones” Jones. The greatest fighter to step into the octagon? He has beaten everyone that MMA as a whole sport has put before him. Current Light Heavyweight champion. 25 wins 1 loss due to disqualification for illegal elbows in his 3rd professional fight back in 2009 against Matt Hamill. This man hasn’t been KO’d or submitted yet, making him 100% the greatest of this decade and to be honest, I don’t see people arguing against the fact he’s the greatest of all time.
Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya, 18 wins, No losses. A man who has fought 7 times over the past 2 years. Current Middleweight Champion. Defeated Robert Whittaker for the title at UFC 243 nearly 3 months ago. Had one of the fights of the year with Kelvin Gastelum for the Interim Championship back in April 2019. He has called Jones out before and Jones said he’d “be excited by the challenge.” Is this a fight that could happen in the future one day.
Well, it’s possible, however, it’s unlikely we’ll see Adesanya go up to light heavyweight anytime soon. Simply because he hasn’t defended his middleweight championship yet. He has the likes of Paulo Costa, Darren Till, Jared Cannonier and Yoel Romero wanting a piece of him. I also wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Kelvin Gastelum getting a rematch before this even becomes a possibility.
If Israel is able to hold onto his title for the next 2-4 years, which will probably how long it’ll take for him to get through all these fights then I think the fight between him and Jones will occur.
Is it a fight I would want to see? Hell yes! Just thinking about the build-up to the fight, the trash talking and the heat between both guys would be salivating. The fight would for sure be a classic, I would love to see how Adesanya’s kickboxing will be able to hold up to Jones, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling ability. Maybe by then, Adesanya’s ground game would’ve improved a ton. However, all of this depends on if he can hold onto the middleweight championship.
